High Dosage Oxygen Therapy
High Dosage Oxygen Therapy (HDOT), also known as Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), involves breathing 100% oxygen for 1 hour in a pressurised vessel, the total treatment time is around 80-90 minutes. Normally, after an initial intensive course, members have a weekly session. It is not a cure for multiple sclerosis, but patients have found relief from various symptoms, including bladder problems, visual disturbance and fatigue.
Oxygen is essential to the healing process. The air we breathe is only 21% oxygen, in contrast High Dosage Oxygen Therapy involves breathing 100% oxygen under pressure, which increases the body's healing ability. HDOT allows the body to carry extra oxygen around the body in the bloodstream and is dissolved at a much greater rate in the blood plasma.
Sports injuries can be treated using HDOT. The frustration of not being able to participate in a sport can mean many athletes re-injure due to returning to their sporting activities too early, before the injury has fully healed. However as High Dosage Oxygen Therapy quickens the healing process, the athlete can be back training and competing much earlier. It can speed healing time to around half.
High Dosage Oxygen Therapy can be used to treat the side affects of radiotherapy. When treating cancer with radiotherapy, the oxygen supply in the treated area can be affected. In the treated area, the small blood vessels can sometimes be damaged by the radiotherapy, causing less blood to reach the area and therefore less oxygen and other nutrients. Over a period of time, the affected tissue can start to break down, leading to open sores and in severe cases the tissue can die completely (radiation necrosis). This damage can happen months or even years after the radiotherapy treatment. High Dosage Oxygen Therapy greatly increases the oxygen supply to the damaged area, which enables the tissue to heal and new blood vessels to grow. Research is being conducted into whether HDOT can reduce cancer growth and improve delivery of chemotherapy drugs to a tumour.
High Dosage Oxygen Therapy can also prove beneficial in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers, myalgic encephalopathy (ME) / chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), cerebral palsy, autism, crohn's disease, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), raynaud's disease, stroke and many other conditions.
